Ampicillin

Generic Name: ampicillin, pronounced as am pi SIL in

Category:

Product Description

A penicillin antibiotic, ampicillin is used to treat or prevent bacterial infections such as meningitis, gonorrhea, pneumonia, bladder infections, or stomach infections. It does not treat flu, colds, or other viral infections.

This medication works by targeting sensitive bacteria and killing them. While the bacteria are growing, the formation of the cell walls are interfered and weakened. Once the cell wall is weak enough, it ruptures – thus killing the bacteria.

Key Information About Ampicillin

– Not For Viral Infection

It should be noted that ampicillin should not be used to treat viral infections such as the common cold.

– Full Course Of Treatment

Make sure to follow the full course of treatment recommended by your doctor. Otherwise, the infection may not be cleared up completely. Long-term or repeated use of this medication can make the bacteria immune / less sensitive, thus making the infection even harder to treat in the future. What’s more is that it could even cause a second infection. If this happens, let your doctor know right away. Your doctor may need to prescribe a different medication to treat it.

– Mild Diarrhea

You might experience mild diarrhea while taking this medication but be cautious as it may get more serious. If you have severe diarrhea, stomach cramps or pain, or bloody stools, contact your doctor right away.

– Birth Control Pills

If you are using birth control pills while taking ampicillin, you should know that you are at high risk of getting pregnant. It is advisable to use an additional form of birth control such as condoms to prevent pregnancy.

– Diabetes

If you are diabetic, you may need to consult your doctor regarding your diet or your diabetes medicine dosage. It’s because the results of your urine glucose may be affected by ampicillin.

– Pregnancy And Breastfeeding
