Product Description

Brahmi herbs are a part of traditional Indian medicine. However, Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) should not be confused with gotu kola and a host of other natural medicines that are sometimes referred to as Brahmi.

Brahmi medication is used in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, anxiety, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder, improving memory, irritable bowel syndrome, allergic conditions, and stress. Also, people take Brahmi to treat mental illness, backache, epilepsy, joint pain, hoarseness and sexual performance for both men and women. Brahmi is sometimes used as a “water pill.”

How Brahmi Medication works

Brahmi medication works by increasing certain brain chemicals that relate to learning, thinking and memory. There has been research that suggests that it also protects brain cells from the chemicals that are involved in Alzheimer’s disease.

Brahmi is possibly effective in improving memory. According to research, taking some specific Bacopa extracts improves some memory measure in healthy older adults. Also, in children aged 6-8 years, Bacopa extract seems to improve hand-eye coordination and some measures of memory.

However, despite being effective in improving memory, Brahmi is ineffective in treating irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Brahmi is as effective as a sugar pill when it comes to keeping IBS symptoms away after remission.

Even though it is claimed to help with many medical conditions, there is no sufficient evidence that Brahmi is effective in treating:

• Anxiety: Early research suggests that 30mL of Bacopa syrup taken daily for 4 weeks was enough to reduce anxiety symptoms including trouble sleeping, nervousness, racing heart, difficulty concentrating, headaches, stomach discomfort, and tiredness.

• Epilepsy: Early research suggests that Bacopa extract taken for 5 months does prevent seizures in people who have epilepsy.

• Mental illness.

• Backache.

• Fluid retention.

• Joint pain (rheumatism).

• Hoarseness.

• Sexual problems.

Bacopa extract is considered possibly safe for adults when taken orally and short-term, a maximum of 12 weeks. Side effects include stomach cramps, increased bowel movements, fatigue, nausea and dry mouth.

Precautions

• There is no available information that points to the safety of Brahmi during pregnancy or breastfeeding. To be on the safe side, avoid this medication during this period.

• Brahmi may lead to a slow heart rate (bradycardia). This could prove dangerous to people who already have a slow heart rate.

• Taking Brahmi might result in “congestion” in the intestines. This gastrointestinal blockage may cause problems in patients with a blockage in their intestines.

• Brahmi could lead to increased secretions in intestines and stomach. This would result in the worsening of ulcers.

• Brahmi medication might be responsible for increased fluid secretions in the blood. This could worsen lung conditions such as emphysema or asthma.

• Taking Brahmi might result in increased levels of thyroid hormone. This medication should, therefore, be avoided if you have a thyroid condition or use thyroid hormone medications.

Dosage

For improved memory and thinking, it is recommended to take 300 mg Brahmi extract daily over a period of 12 weeks. Studies have been conducted on specific Brahmi extracts (Keenmind; Bacomind).
